The 6.5 x 47 Lapua cartridge with the 6mm version (6 x 47 Lapua)

The 6x47 Lapua vs the 6mm XC
The 6 x 47 Lapua cartridge is a new 6mm cartridge designed off a necked down 6.5 x47 Lapua cartridge.  Lapua brass has just recently become available in the U.S. and may be purchased through Graf & Sons.  While many feel a 6.5mm cartridge has merit, many also see this cartridge, in a 6mm version, as fulfilling a long desired need for a cartridge that has inherently more "horsepower" and a larger case capacity than the 6mmBR, the 6mm Dasher, the 6mm BRX, etc.  The case is very close in size, and performance to a 6XC.  The quality of the Lapua brass is unbelievable, and it has a small primer pocket and a small flash hole, which makes it even better.  From a lot of perspectives, this brass is an ideal high pressure vessel that helps to make this 6mm cartridge a fast hot cartridge.

Initial load testing shows that the 6 x 47 Lapua cartridge performs exceptionally well with 6mm 105-107 gr bullets, and the 115 gr DTAC bullets may be used as well.  Initial results also indicate that H4350 and N160 are excellent powders for the cartridge with heavier bullets.

The 6.5 x 47 Lapua and the 6mm Version (6 x 47 Lapua)

Lapua Brass - The Ideal Pressure Vessel

The 6 x 47 Lapua essentially uses Lapua 6.5 x 47 cases necked down to 6mm.  This brass is exceptional - very hard in the web area yet well annealed at the neck.  The Lapua brass is very uniform, and it has a small primer pocket and a small flash hole.  This combination of attributes makes this brass the ideal high pressure vessel for high velocity loadings.  People who shoot Lapua's 6mmBR brass know how brass of this quility and these attributes can enhance the power and performance of a cartridge.  This brass is being offered and sold by Graf & Sons (800) 531-2666.  While the first load of brass sold out in about 4 days, other shipments are forthcoming, and they will have a variety of reloading dies for the 6mm version in stock as well.

New Reamers - Pacific Tool and Dave Kiff

Reamers for this cartridge have been recently designed as a result of a combined effort of Robert Whitley and Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool.  Except where noted, the reamers on this website were designed as match reamers based on the recently imported brass, existing match bullets, and the reloading die dimensions for dies that are expected to be released for sale by Forester, Redding and other die makers.  The reamers were set up for highpower shooting as "no neck turn" reamers with approximately .005" neck clearance.  The body dimensions of these 6mm reamers are also tighter than the standard CIP print for the 6.5 x 47 Lapua Cartridge.  These reamers are currently available through David Kiff at Pacific Tool (541) 826-5808.

If you expect to neck turn and wish to set up a reamer to shoot neck turned brass, or just want a tighter neck, call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and he will set up a reamer to your requirements.

6XC Conversion

Another option to set up a 6 x 47 Lapua is to use a 6XC reamer and hold it short approximately .050" (actually .0486").  You can use a 6XC sizing die (with .050" ground off the bottom and with the decapping pin changed to a small decapping pin).  The only thing you are required to do is neck down the 6.5 x47 Lapua cases by running them through the modified 6XC resizing die, then load them and shoot them.  On initial set up there is no neck turning, no trimming, and no special fire forming!
